the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters

A bit about SSOHC
Our secret society was formed in January 2017, bringing together a group of 20 friends with a passion for crafting. Back then we created 27 Christmas themed post box toppers for the main post boxes around Hertford with the aim of bringing a smile to Hertford and fundraising for Isabel Hospice.

 

Since then, like a woolly pullover, we've grown and grown. From 20 friends we now have over 150 crafty members and a few projects under our belt. Some have featured in the national press and even on the telly!

Yarnbombing sounds dangerous. What is it? 
The only danger is from a flying knitting needle or getting tangled in wool.
The definition of yarn bombing is to cover (an object or structure in a public place) with decorative knitted or crocheted material, as a form of street art, especially secretly and without official permission. Yarn bombing is usually knitting and crochet but we have extended this to others forms of crafting too.

 

Why are we a SECRET society?

Yarnbombing is best done quietly, with stealth and in the early hours to bring maximum surprise and joy to the local community. Although it's tricky transporting a GIANT woolly octopus across town without being seen. 
We love to see people's faces when they spot our woolly work for the first time.

 

We love supporting local charities

SSOHC has raised over £189,000 for local charities since our inception in 2017. These include Isabel Hospice, Samaritans, Carers in Herts, Mudlarks, Essex & Herts Air Ambulance and Hertfordshire Breast Unit Appeal to name a few.
